If you’re looking to write a book for the first time, great! Fantastic idea. All you really need is a pen and paper or a laptop and away you go. But there are a few things that you should do before you start writing.
Create a Plot Outline
This doesn’t have to be anything fancy and can be as detailed or vague as you like but there are a couple of key elements to include. Ensure you have the beginning, middle and end decided upon or at least some idea of what they will be. Also, if you can plan out one or two other key moments in your story, this will really help.
Create Character Profiles
When writing a book for the first time, or any time in fact, it’s good to create simple character profiles for your main characters. These only need to be a paragraph in length but should tell you about a character’s age, personality, likes, dislikes and motivations. By doing this you will ensure that your characters are unique and distinct from one another.
Define Your Audience
Defining your audience will inform you of requirements such as tone, language and length. For instance, if you’re writing Middle Grade fiction (8-12 year olds), you won’t have any bad language and your story will be much shorter than, let’s say, a fantasy epic.
